What is BPH?
An enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a non- cancerous condition resulting in an enlarged prostate gland, commonly affecting men over 50.
BPH compresses the urethra and irritates the bladder, leading to urinary issues. BPH is a normal part of aging, affecting about 50% of men aged 51-60 and over 80% of those over 70. Common causes and risk factors
include aging, hormonal changes, and family history.

WHAT IS PROSTATE ARTERY EMBOLIZATION (PAE)?
PAE is often used for patients with large prostates and urinary symptoms who want to avoid the recovery and sexual side effects of surgery. PAE shows the same longlasting outcomes as urological surgical interventions, with most patients seeing improvement in about 1 to 3 months and lasting throughout their lifetime. Formally recognized as a treatment for BPH by the American Urological Association in 2023, PAE results in a 60-70% reduction in patients' symptoms without any changes in their sexual function, including the risk of retrograde ejaculation. While providing great outcomes, PAE allows for a quick recovery as patients are able to go home without a urinary catheter the same day as the procedure. The procedure is simple. An interventional radiologist inserts a catheter into blood vessels to reach the prostate's arteries. An embolic agent is then injected to block blood flow, causing the prostate to shrink and relieving pressure on the urethra, which improves urinary symptoms.
